Taking an AI voice screen
What happens in an Emoti AI screen, how long it takes, what you can control, and how to give your best answers.
Some companies use Emoti to run their first-round interview as a short voice conversation. An AI interviewer asks a handful of questions the hiring team wrote, listens to your answers, and passes them to the team. People at the company review every answer before anyone decides what happens next.
How you're invited
You'll get a link from the company, by email or in a message from the recruiter. An emailed invite says how long the screen takes, that an AI interviewer asks the questions and that a person reviews every answer. You take the screen when it suits you, on a computer or phone with a microphone. There's no account to create.
Before you start
The first page tells you everything up front:
- Length: about how many minutes the screen takes and how many questions there are. Most screens are around 15 minutes.
- Camera: whether your camera must be on, is up to you, or stays off. When it's optional, your scores never depend on it.
- Who listens: an AI interviewer asks the questions, and people at the company review your answers.
- Language: if the company offers more than one, choose the language you want to answer in. The interviewer speaks it too.
To begin, tick the box to confirm you understand that an AI interviewer asks the questions, your answers are recorded and transcribed, and people at the company review them before any decision. Then choose Start the screen.
During the screen
- The interviewer reads each question aloud. Choose Hear it again if you want it repeated.
- Answer out loud, in your own words. Some questions have a short follow-up so you can add detail.
- Choose Next question when you're done. You can pause between questions, so take a breath or a sip of water.
- After the last question, choose Finish. That's everything.
How your answers are used
The hiring team writes the questions and decides what a strong answer looks like before anyone is interviewed, so every candidate is asked the same things and judged the same way. Emoti summarizes each answer against that guide for the team. People make the decision, not the AI. Read more in How decisions are made.
Tips for a strong screen
- Find a quiet spot and test your microphone first.
- Answer with a real example: the situation, what you did and what happened.
- Keep each answer to a couple of minutes. Clear and specific beats long.
- If a question isn't clear, choose Hear it again before you answer.

If you need an adjustment
If a voice screen doesn't work for you, for example because of a disability, a speech difference or your connection, you can ask for something different before you start. On the first page, choose Need an adjustment, or rather talk to a person? and pick what would help: more time for each answer, written answers instead of speaking, a conversation with a person instead, or something else. Add a note if you like, then choose Send request. The request goes to the company's recruiting team.
You can also contact the company that invited you directly. See Asking for adjustments.
